June 2013 Fishing Report

Summer time and the fishings easy. Well not exactly, but is as good as it gets. All water is open and the options really are endless. From high alpine goldens, indicatorless nymphing to get down to the big guys, sight fishing hoppers, tricos being sipped by huge rainbows, the list goes on and on. We are so lucky to have sooo many options around the Mammoth area, and the time to be here is now. The weather has been warm and the winds strong. Looks like this week is the last of the fronts to the north, so we should get back to windless mornings for our buddies, the TRICO. The more seasons I guide up here I realize how valuable and fun these small mayflys are to our local rivers. They are finally showing up in massive quantities every morning. The trico hatch, usually from about 7:30- 10 AM on our rivers is absolutely my favorite hatch to guide. When those big guys are slowly sipping spinners the high fives are plenty. So great to know your client is going to hook a fish two feet before the flies even get to its mouth. I have been guiding all of our local waters these last few weeks. The East Walker is starting to be a bit more steady. I think the trout have finally accepted the lower flows and are getting comfortable. The best fishing, as it is normally, has been early and late with tricos and caddis. Middays have been fun with the ability to cover a lot of water. Hot Creek has been ever steady with its hatches and hungry fish, and the first hoppers of the season are here. Always a great way to finish up a full day guide trip by throwing hoppers to well hunted trout. And… The San Joaquin is perfect!!! I never take for granted just how lucky we are to be able to guide and fish the SJ. The flows are perfect and the fish have not gotten educated yet. I’m guiding down on The SJ a lot the next few weeks and can’t wait to spend some serious time on that river. As always, the time is now!! See you on the river, Nathan

    Hi Nate,
Great Picture! We really enjoyed fishing with you on the Ranch. Great call on the mid-day baetis hatch, and teaching us how to air mend. Looking forward to fishing with you again.

    Best Regards,
