July 2014 Fishing Report
Good ol’ summer sure is in full swing in The Eastern Siearras right now, and the amazing mother nature gets all the credit. It is really amazing how well our local creeks, rivers, and lakes are fishing while we are in the middle of our third consecutive drought year. The trout are still happy and getting fat on all of the plentiful aquatic insects, and fishing is so much better than I had anticipated for sure. We have had some really good thunderstorms this past week, and more are predicted in the next few weeks. Those summer storms could keep all of our trout happy and healthy through the rest of the summer if they keep rolling in. The flows on the magnificent San Joaquin went from 77cfs to over 300cfs overnight last week! Of course it doesn’t take long for them to come back down, but it is so helpful for the trout to be able to move into the best runs and pools as the water gets lower. These storms are helping fill up our local lakes, and are an amazing ally to The East Walker. I will be guiding some days up there and sure hope to take some cooler water temps, as well as guide some great clients on happier fish. Overall, I really think all of our waters will fish stellar in August, so plan on coming up if you’re on the fence! Especially if these thunderstorms persist. THANK YOU MOTHER NATURE!!!!
